On 25 May 2026, George Varlas, Product Manager at Optimus Energy, participated online as an invited speaker at the Postgraduate Students’ Seminar of the MSc Program in Applied Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).

A graduate of the Department of Physics at NKUA, holding both an MSc in Applied Physics from the same program and a PhD specializing in Numerical Weather Prediction, George shared his professional journey with the students. His presentation highlighted how a career that began in academic research evolved into a broader role within the energy sector, combining scientific expertise with strategic thinking, technology, and product development to create innovative solutions for modern electricity markets.

During the seminar, George presented the rapidly evolving energy landscape and the opportunities it creates for professionals with strong analytical and scientific backgrounds. At Optimus Energy, the largest Renewable Energy Sources (RES) Aggregator in Greece, multidisciplinary teams work across a wide range of activities, including renewable energy forecasting, energy trading and market optimization for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Demand Response, and digital platform development.

He emphasized that fields such as machine learning, data analytics, numerical modelling, software development, and electricity market analysis are becoming increasingly important in the energy transition, offering Applied Physics graduates the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges with tangible impact.

The key message of the presentation was clear: scientific education is far more than a theoretical foundation, it is a powerful competitive advantage. George’s own career path demonstrated how the analytical thinking, problem-solving mindset, and quantitative skills developed through physics can open diverse and rewarding career opportunities, extending well beyond academia into one of the fastest-growing and most innovative sectors of the economy.

Inspired to shape the future of energy?

At Optimus Energy, we are always looking for talented people who are passionate about innovation, technology, and the energy transition. If you would like to apply your scientific background to real-world challenges and become part of a team driving the transformation of the electricity sector, we would love to hear from you.

Send your CV to: hr@optimusenergy.gr and join us in optimizing the energy systems of tomorrow.
