The panel brought together perspectives from across the BESS value chain, with Pavle Milekic, Associate Director at EBRD, and Loukas Botsis, Senior Manager at Baringa, contributing the financing and advisory perspectives <strong>alongside Optimus Energy\u2019s market and operational experience<\/strong>.<br\/><br\/>A central theme of the discussion was that, while battery technology is becoming increasingly standardised, <strong>the economics of battery storage remain fundamentally local<\/strong>. Differences in market design, balancing mechanisms, renewable penetration, price volatility and regulatory frameworks mean that a BESS project in Greece can face a very different revenue environment from a comparable asset in Romania, Bulgaria or another European market.<br\/><br\/><strong>From Battery Assets to Active Market Participants<\/strong><br\/><br\/>During the discussion, Elena Kalogeropoulou highlighted the increasing importance of viewing BESS not simply as infrastructure, but as <strong>highly flexible market participants whose value depends on how effectively they can interact with multiple electricity markets<\/strong>.<br\/><br\/>Battery systems are uniquely positioned within the energy system: they can act both as generation and demand, responding rapidly to market signals while shifting energy across time. This flexibility allows them to combine revenues from the Day-Ahead and Intraday Markets with opportunities arising from balancing and ancillary services.<br\/><br\/>However, capturing this value requires significantly more than simply connecting a battery to the grid. As the European storage market moves towards greater merchant exposure, <strong>trading, forecasting and cross-market optimisation capabilities are becoming fundamental components of a successful BESS business model<\/strong>. Decisions regarding when to charge, discharge, reserve capacity or participate in balancing services must increasingly be taken dynamically and continuously.<br\/><br\/>For aggregators and market representatives such as <strong>Optimus Energy<\/strong>, this creates a new operational landscape in which advanced market access, optimization technology and deep knowledge of local electricity markets become critical to the commercial performance of storage assets.<br\/><br\/><strong>Greece: A New Market for Battery Flexibility<\/strong><br\/><br\/>The Greek electricity market provides a particularly relevant example of this transition.<br\/><br\/>Rapid renewable energy deployment has significantly transformed market dynamics, increasing periods of low or negative electricity prices while simultaneously creating a growing need for flexibility across the power system. At the same time, the development of balancing markets is opening additional opportunities for fast-response assets such as batteries.<br\/><br\/>Within this environment, BESS can play a central role by <strong>absorbing electricity during periods of renewable surplus and returning it to the system when its value is higher<\/strong>, while also providing valuable balancing capabilities.<br\/><br\/>Yet the growing deployment of storage will inevitably change the economics of the markets in which batteries participate. Revenue streams that appear particularly attractive during the early stages of market development may become increasingly competitive as additional storage capacity enters the system.<br\/><br\/>This makes a <strong>multi-market approach<\/strong> particularly important. Rather than relying on a single revenue source, long-term BESS strategies need to dynamically evaluate opportunities across energy and balancing markets while taking into account efficiency losses, degradation, operational constraints and the evolving competitive landscape.<br\/><br\/><strong>Merchant BESS Requires a Different Approach to Bankability<\/strong><br\/><br\/>The panel also explored the broader transition from subsidy-supported storage projects towards increasingly merchant business models. Early BESS development across several European markets has benefited from auctions, grants, Contracts for Difference and other forms of revenue support. As the sector matures, however, a growing share of projects will need to demonstrate their viability through market-based revenues.<br\/><br\/>This transition creates new challenges for project financing. For lenders and investors, assessing a merchant BESS requires assumptions not only about future electricity prices, but also about balancing market evolution, competition between storage assets, renewable penetration and changes in regulation and market design. As a result, <strong>the quality and credibility of the operational and optimisation strategy become increasingly relevant to the overall investment case<\/strong>.<br\/><br\/>This challenge is particularly relevant in <strong>Greece<\/strong>, where there is still a degree of hesitation around fully merchant storage projects. <strong>While a limited number of merchant BESS projects have already progressed to the final stages of construction and operation, a broader pipeline is expected to advance as storage becomes an increasingly important priority for the Greek electricity system<\/strong>.<br\/><br\/><strong>Unlocking this next wave of investment will require the financing community to become increasingly familiar with the underlying economics of merchant storage<\/strong>. Rather than relying primarily on subsidies or other forms of government-backed support, lenders will need to develop a deeper understanding of how BESS revenues are generated across the Day-Ahead, Intraday and Balancing Markets, how these revenue streams interact, and how they may evolve as storage penetration increases.<br\/><br\/><strong>Supporting the first generation of successfully operating and profitable merchant projects will therefore be particularly important<\/strong>. These projects can establish the operational track record and market evidence needed to demonstrate the bankability of BESS under market-based conditions and provide a stronger foundation for financing the projects that follow.<br\/><br\/><strong>Optimus Energy aims to actively support this transition<\/strong>, both through sophisticated cross-market optimisation and by broadening the commercial structures available to BESS owners and investors. Alongside merchant and profit-sharing arrangements, this includes structures designed to provide greater revenue visibility, such as <strong>tolling agreements, revenue floors and hybrid floor-and-profit-sharing models<\/strong>.<br\/><br\/>By combining market-based optimisation with contractual structures that can allocate merchant risk between different parties, Optimus Energy aims to help bridge the gap between the revenue potential of BESS and the level of predictability required by lenders and investors.<br\/><br\/>Ultimately, developing a sustainable merchant BESS market in Greece will require cooperation across the entire value chain. Developers, optimizers, and lenders will need to build a shared understanding of storage economics and progressively move from dependence on public support towards <strong>bankable business models based on the intrinsic value that flexibility can provide to the electricity market<\/strong>.<br\/><br\/><strong>The Next Phase of BESS Will Be Defined by Optimization<\/strong><br\/><br\/>The discussion at Balkan Battery Day reflected a broader shift taking place across the European battery storage industry. The question is no longer simply <strong>how much battery capacity Europe needs<\/strong>.
