At the 9th Athens Conference on EU Energy Law & Policy, Optimus Energy delivered a deep and timely exploration of how Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can unlock value in today’s rapidly evolving electricity markets. The presentation, delivered by Stella Zaharia, CEO, and Elena Kalogeropoulou, BESS Development Manager, focused on the structuring of BESS optimization contracts and the operational, commercial, and regulatory complexity behind successful storage projects

From renewable growth to system flexibility

The discussion opened with a clear picture of the structural shift taking place across all power systems. Renewable energy sources now frequently dominate electricity production, with Greece ranking among the top EU countries in solar penetration. As renewable shares increase, so do system imbalances and curtailments, with projections indicating that by the end of 2025, up to 15% of renewable generation in Greece could be curtailed.

In this new reality, flexibility becomes a system-critical resource. BESS is no longer a complementary technology, but a central enabler for integrating renewables, stabilizing markets, and managing volatility.

Why BESS optimization is fundamentally complex

A key message of the presentation was that operating a grid-scale battery is far more complex than a simple charge-and-discharge strategy. Real-world BESS operation requires continuous optimization across multiple markets: Day-Ahead, Intraday, and Balancing, each with different price signals, timelines, and constraints.

Elena Kalogeropoulou emphasized that successful optimization, especially in mature markets, highly depends on:

High-resolution forecasting and real-time decision engines

Automated trading and 24/7 market participation

Sophisticated state-of-charge (SoC) management

Continuous compliance with technical limits, warranties, and regulatory rules

As electricity markets increasingly move “by the millisecond,” batteries must be operated through advanced algorithms capable of reacting instantly to changing conditions. For this reason, Optimus Energy partnered with enspired, an internationally proven provider of dynamic optimization solutions, leveraging state-of-the-art technology to ensure the optimal market participation of energy storage assets. More information about the collaboration is available here: https://www.enspired-trading.com/bess-optimization-greece

Revenue stacking: turning volatility into opportunity

One of the core themes of the presentation was revenue stacking, or the ability of BESS to generate income from multiple market layers simultaneously. This includes energy arbitrage in wholesale markets, capacity payments from ancillary services, and activated balancing energy revenues.

However, revenue stacking is not simply about accessing many markets. It requires a single, unified optimization strategy that continuously re-evaluates market conditions, regulatory constraints, and price uncertainty. Long-term revenue predictability is inherently challenging, making advanced scenario analysis and continuous re-optimization essential.

The operating framework behind the screens

The presentation provided a rare look behind the scenes of BESS operation. From real-time asset data and VPP dispatch instructions to trading platforms, optimization engines, and customer transparency, Elena outlined how multiple systems must work seamlessly together.

The integrated framework by Optimus Energy ensures:

Full transparency for asset owners

Real-time visibility of performance and revenues

Robust dispatch coordination and compliance

Secure, reliable participation across all relevant markets

Such infrastructure is a prerequisite for scaling BESS portfolios and building investor confidence.

Performance warranties as a strategic lever

A particularly impactful part of the presentation focused on performance warranties and their direct impact on revenues. Degradation-informed optimization, which accounts for battery health and cycling limits in real time, was presented as a critical factor in maximizing long-term value.

Even small shifts in parameters such as round-trip efficiency, usable SoC, or availability can translate into millions in lost or gained revenues over a project’s lifetime. Alignment between optimization strategies, commercial contracts, and OEM warranty terms is therefore not optional, but strategic.

Choosing the right commercial model

The presentation concluded with a comparison of different BESS commercial structures, including fully merchant models, tolling agreements, and floor-and-profit-sharing arrangements. Each model reflects a different balance between risk, upside potential, and revenue stability, reinforcing that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The optimal structure depends on the asset’s technical characteristics, the owner’s risk appetite, and market conditions.

Optimus Energy demonstrated that unlocking the full value of BESS requires far more than market access. It demands deep market expertise, advanced optimization technology, robust operational frameworks, and carefully structured contracts that align incentives across all stakeholders. As renewable-dominated grids become the norm, such integrated approaches will define the successful energy storage projects that will bloom in Greece.

In case you missed it 👉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naJLSFUloz4=4020s

As part of the Energy Innovation Forum – Thessaly 2025, held on 11 December in Larissa, Optimus Energy highlighted the critical role of techno-economic analysis in the design and implementation of industrial self-consumption projects.

Stelios Vagropoulos, PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Head of the RES Department at Optimus Energy, presented the evaluation methodology for such projects, focusing on the contemporary challenges of the electricity market and the solutions offered by combining Photovoltaic (PV) systems with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

From system design to investment decision

The presentation demonstrated that the success of a self-consumption project does not depend solely on installed capacity, but on a comprehensive analysis that includes:

the self-consumption scheme (net billing, simple or virtual),

the choice between zero feed-in or energy injection into the grid,

the technical and economic characteristics of the equipment,

as well as a detailed breakdown of electricity costs.

Particular emphasis was placed on the distinction between energy supply costs, regulated charges, and long-term electricity costs, the latter requiring specialized market simulation tools for reliable assessment.

A representative case study was presented involving an industrial facility with a seasonal consumption profile, examining:

the installation of a 1 MWp PV system under a zero feed-in configuration,

in combination with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The results showed that energy storage can act as a catalyst for maximizing cost savings, particularly in dynamic pricing environments (orange tariff), where the Market Clearing Price (MCP) has a direct impact on economic performance.

The sensitivity analysis presented (comparison of different BESS sizes) demonstrated that the gradual decline in battery costs is creating new savings opportunities for industrial consumers. At the same time, alternative battery use cases were highlighted, including:

deployment of BESS in industrial facilities without PV systems,

applications in RES projects with surplus energy injection into the grid,

participation through Aggregators / Balance Responsible Parties (BRPs).

By leveraging specialized simulation tools and scientific expertise, Optimus Energy supports its clients across all stages — from feasibility studies to informed investment decision-making. As highlighted during the event, self-consumption and energy storage are now strategic tools for reducing energy costs and enhancing the competitiveness of Greek industry.

Stella Zaharia, CEO of Optimus Energy, participated in the 5th Energy Legal, Regulation & Compliance Forum, in the panel discussion titled “The Energy Market of 2030: Regulatory Reforms, Investments and New Technologies”, alongside Panagiotis Papastamatiou, CEO of the Hellenic Wind Energy Association (ELETAEN), and Aristotelis Aivaliotis, former Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Resources at the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy.

In her remarks, Stella Zaharia offered a comprehensive assessment of market developments over recent years, identifying the critical steps required for the future of the energy market. The past few years, and particularly 2025, did not come as a surprise to the energy sector, but rather confirmed a trajectory that had long been visible. Negative prices, increasing RES curtailments, growing complexity in managing the new reality imposed by coupled markets, and the lack of sufficient storage and flexibility solutions did not emerge unexpectedly. Instead, they were natural outcomes of the rapid penetration of renewables without the parallel maturity of the mechanisms needed to effectively support their operation and, by extension, the system as a whole.

As she noted, the “fit-and-forget” narrative has now definitively collapsed. In the new energy era, the mere installation of renewable energy projects is no longer sufficient. In the years ahead, the market will make it increasingly clear that the true value of an investment is revealed during the operational phase and through 24/7 active participation in the markets.

In the near term, until storage reaches adequate levels and flexibility is enhanced, RES curtailments are not expected to decline but rather to intensify, as installed generation capacity continues to grow faster than system demand. In this environment, energy flexibility solutions are no longer optional but essential. At the same time, she stressed that emerging flexibility mechanisms and energy storage assets are not “easy” or plug-and-play solutions; on the contrary, they introduce a new, deeper level of complexity reflected in active management and market operations.

Particular emphasis was placed on battery energy storage systems, which are expected to be at the center of market developments in Greece over the next five years. These assets are entirely dependent on market signals, with their value deriving from continuous and dynamic optimization across multiple markets. Any forecasting error, operational delay, or uncoordinated decision translates directly into lost value. As she pointed out, the coming years will distinguish those who are truly capable of managing energy storage solutions.

Within this context, she underlined that in mature energy markets the use of automated and algorithmic systems has become a prerequisite for effective operation. Market volatility, data volume, and the speed at which market signals change make it impossible to rely solely on human intervention. The role of humans is not eliminated but shifts toward strategy, oversight, and critical decision-making, with technology acting as a necessary accelerator of reliability and efficiency.

In this environment, Optimus Energy has made a deliberate choice to invest in the optimization of energy flexibility. As the largest private Aggregator in the Greek energy market, with a portfolio exceeding 4.5 GW and managing more than 7 TWh annually, the company brings hands-on operational expertise to the management of complex portfolios.

Finally, she referred to Optimus Energy’s collaboration with international partners, emphasizing that Greece does not need to “reinvent the wheel,” but should promptly adopt practices that have already been tested in mature markets. At the same time, she encouraged regulators, market operators, and institutional stakeholders to follow the same approach, drawing on the lessons and experience already available internationally.

In closing, she stressed that while the challenges ahead are real, the opportunities are equally significant. By investing in operations, knowledge, and technology, the new energy reality can be transformed into value for the benefit of the system, investors, and society as a whole.

Optimus Energy participated in the 6th Solarplaza Summit Greece: PV & Storage, held on 20 November 2025 in Athens, an event that brought together the country’s leading energy stakeholders at a pivotal moment for Greece’s energy transformation. With rapidly growing solar capacity, evolving market rules, and the emergence of large-scale storage, the summit served as a platform for meaningful dialogue on how innovation and flexibility will shape the coming decade.

Our CEO Stella Zacharia joined the headline executive panel, “What energizes Greece’s energy leaders? Bold bets for the future,” engaging in a forward-focused discussion on the operational and strategic challenges facing Greece’s renewable sector. Stella highlighted how the energy landscape has become increasingly complex due to frequent negative prices, heightened volatility, and the introduction of 15-minute market products. She emphasized that these shifts make real-time decision-making and advanced digital infrastructure essential for the modern RES portfolio.

Speaking about the future of operations, Stella outlined how Optimus Energy is expanding its Virtual Power Plant (VPP) to deliver real-time flexibility and smarter control of renewable assets. This includes automated market participation, imbalance minimization, enhanced forecasting, and the integration of flexible demand, an area in which we already hold an active role. She also stressed the strategic importance of collaborating with leading international partners, as access to cutting-edge optimization, forecasting, and dispatching tools is becoming indispensable for navigating Greece’s fast-moving energy markets. Stella concluded that automation, digital readiness, and cross-market flexibility will be central to unlocking the next wave of renewable growth in Greece.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Dimitrios Chatzigiannis, Strategy & Technology Consultant to Optimus Energy, delivered one of the summit’s most forward-looking presentations: “Reimagining solar: How innovation will reshape the future of PV.” His session focused on how solar and storage assets evolve from static generators into live, continuously optimized systems that require coordination, speed, and data-rich digital infrastructure. Drawing on his analysis, Dimitrios described a rapidly transforming ecosystem where distributed resources, aggregators, flexibility providers, and traders interact in real time across multiple market layers. He illustrated how this new architecture demands cloud-native data pipelines, AI/ML-based optimization, and fully automated trading logic to support real-time operations.

A core theme of his talk was continuous optimization, demonstrated through examples of intraday forecast updates, imbalance minimization, and VPP coordination for curtailment management. He showed how battery energy storage systems (BESS) can unlock value across Day-Ahead, Intraday, Reserve, and Balancing markets through advanced optimization.

Optimus Energy highlights that while asset owners may only see top-level outcomes such as energy sales or PPA revenues, the real value lies below the surface: high-resolution forecasting, automated bidding, risk management, 24/7 monitoring, compliance processes, and advanced analytics, all of which are essential foundations for the modern aggregator and trading firm.

Greece’s sustainable future will be shaped not only by capacity additions, but by intelligent infrastructure, automation, and flexibility. The evolving market requires a new operational mindset, one where renewables, storage, and flexible demand are orchestrated dynamically to maximize value and support grid stability. Optimus Energy’s ongoing investments in digital capabilities, partnerships, and expansions reflect this vision and position the company at the forefront of the country’s transition to a smarter, more resilient energy system.

As Greece prepares for unprecedented renewable penetration and deeper market reform, Optimus Energy remains committed to enabling the next chapter of this transition: one defined by innovation, collaboration, and the intelligent use of data-driven flexibility solutions.

At the recent event “The Future of Power Markets in Greece and Southeast Europe”, organized by the Greek Energy Forum, Dr. Dimitrios I. Chatzigiannis, Consultant at Optimus Energy S.A., joined an engaging panel discussion that brought together market leaders, experts, and professionals from across the energy sector. His insights offered a deep dive into three core areas defining the next phase of the energy transition: the dynamics of real-time market participation, the optimization of flexibility solutions, and the operational backbone behind transparent and efficient trading.

Dr. Chatzigiannis highlighted that while renewables in Greece have traditionally relied on Day-Ahead Market Clearing Prices, the rise of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) opens the door to thousands of trading opportunities per day. With markets such as Intraday Auctions and Continuous Trading introducing highly dynamic price signals, successful operation now demands real-time responsiveness rather than static scheduling. He explained that smart optimizers, like Optimus Energy’s partner, enspired, continuously re-evaluate market data and forecasts to decide when, where, and how much energy to commit, maximizing value while minimizing risk. This paradigm shift transforms energy storage into an active, revenue-generating market participant.

Focusing on the technical and operational foundation of energy management, Dr. Chatzigiannis presented how Optimus Energy’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP) framework integrates real-time data to deliver precise dispatch decisions, while Optimus Energy ensures compliance, commercial settlement, and seamless integration with trading platforms that the company is active in such as HEnEx and IPTO. This approach enables assets to unlock their full economic potential across all timeframes while maintaining security, control, and regulatory alignment.

In concluding his remarks, Dr. Chatzigiannis expanded on a concept often misunderstood in energy trading: that market access is not limited to simple “bidding”. Using the “iceberg” analogy, he illustrated that the end act of bidding represents only a fraction of the daily operations behind energy management. True market access, as Optimus Energy practices it, encompasses a wide range of functions, from advanced forecasting techniques to accurately predict renewable production, demand, and price dynamics, to continuous portfolio monitoring, imbalance cost management, flexibility dispatch, and real-time IT integration with SCADA and API platforms. Behind the scenes, continuous communication with grid operators, regulatory compliance, metering data management, and the use of hedging instruments such as PPAs complete the operational framework. As Dr. Chatzigiannis emphasized, only by mastering these interdependent layers can a route-to-market provider achieve sustained market performance and provide real value to its clients and contribute to grid stability.

Optimus Energy is a frontrunner in Greece’s evolving energy landscape, combining technical innovation, market expertise, and transparent operations to bridge the gap between renewable generation, flexibility solutions, and modern trading environments. The company remains committed to supporting Greece’s energy transition through cutting-edge optimization solutions, smart grid integration, and partnerships that bring international best practices to the Greek market.

Stella Zacharia, CEO of Optimus Energy, appeared on Plug into Green on OPEN TV with journalist Thodoris Panagoulis, in an interview that shed light on the deeper and hidden aspects of the energy transition, the challenges of the market, and her vision for the future of energy in Greece.

Ms. Zacharia described the past decade as a period of radical “energy transformation,” not merely transition. As she explained, the energy sector is changing simultaneously on technological, institutional, and operational levels, with new rules, integrated markets, and increased complexity for all stakeholders. Greece, she noted, has made remarkable progress toward green investments and growth, but the real challenge now lies beyond installation: within the energy markets themselves and their operational mechanisms. “The integration of European markets means that no country operates in isolation. Decisions must be made in real time and executed on technologically efficient tools,” she emphasized.

Referring to the role of Optimus Energy, Ms. Zacharia explained that the company was the first to be established in Greece with the purpose of representing renewable energy plants in the power markets. “Renewable sources can no longer remain passive players. Every day, we are responsible for accurate production forecasting, imbalances management, and the commercial integration of assets into the markets. If we don’t do our job correctly, both the system and the investments are at risk,” she underlined. With a portfolio exceeding 4.5 GW of renewables and flexible load, Optimus Energy has evolved into a key energy optimization player, investing in technology, risk management, and compliance with international standards.

The discussion also turned to the final cost for end consumers, an issue of universal concern. Ms. Zacharia explained that “the energy cost is not only the cost of production, but the sum of all the operations that keep the lights on” from capacity availability charges to compensations from live grid operation. “Generation is just one part of the complete equation. For it to be truly effective, it must be properly managed,” she added. She also pointed out that energy storage represents the next critical step still pending for Greece. “The full development of storage, both battery systems and pumped hydro, will complete the puzzle of the energy transition.” In this context, she highlighted the flagship projects of the GEK TERNA Group, such as the 150 MW battery system and the pumped storage project in Amfilochia, which serve as benchmarks for the next phase of the energy system.

Commenting on the challenges of the energy transition, the CEO of Optimus Energy stated that “everyone involved must constantly adapt and evolve.” As the first and largest aggregator in Greece, the company operates at the forefront of developments and is often called upon to find solutions that later guide the entire market. “The challenge is to accept that markets are in continuous transformation and to remain flexible in our processes,” she noted.

She also made special reference to Greece’s position on the European energy map: “Our country has drawn Europe’s attention in investments. More than 50% of demand is already covered by renewables, and this percentage will continue to rise in the coming years.” She further highlighted Optimus Energy’s international collaborations with companies such as enspired (Austria) and emsys (Germany), which bring cutting-edge know-how to the Greek market, particularly in areas such as Virtual Power Plant (VPP) systems and algorithmic optimization of storage assets.

The interview concluded with a look toward the future: “Our vision has always been to optimize Greece’s energy future, orchestrating seamlessly all the assets we represent, removing complexity bearing our clients, and supporting the system operator,” said Ms. Zacharia.
“Given the company’s growth rate and the continuous expansion of our portfolio, it’s safe to say that by 2030 Optimus Energy may be managing approximately 25% of the total energy produced in Greece,” she added.

Optimus Energy is not limited to the representation of generating assets but leads the way by investing in flexible energy solutions and remote management technologies that enable real-time responsiveness to market signals and the active participation of assets in live trading activities. The installation of renewables was only the first step. The next one is smart management, optimization, and orchestration of the new energy reality.

In case you missed it 👉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL2T-vGP54c

In Solarplaza’s webinar “What’s the Deal with Merchant Standalone Batteries in Greece?”, Elena Kalogeropoulou, Energy Trader & Business Developer at Optimus Energy, offered key insights into how Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can fully unlock their market potential in Greece. Drawing from Optimus Energy’s experience as the country’s leading market access provider and its strategic partnership with enspired, Europe’s top optimizer, she outlined the commercial, technical, and market factors shaping this fast-evolving sector.

Greece’s power system is undergoing a profound transformation. Renewables already dominate the country’s electricity generation mix, with more than half of the total demand met by clean sources and with more renewables expected to enter the market in the coming years, the majority of Greece’s electricity will soon be covered by renewable generation. Yet, this rapid renewable growth has brought significant challenges.

In the first half of 2025 alone, 1327 GWh of renewable generation, nearly 10% of total output, was curtailed, up sharply from 513 GWh the previous year. Curtailments have now become a daily occurrence in Optimus Energy’s trading activities, observed in real time across our portfolio and directly impacting renewable producers’ revenues. This surge in curtailments underscores an urgent need for flexibility solutions, where BESS are set to play a decisive role. “The increasing occurrence of negative prices is an opportunity, signaling that the system urgently needs flexibility, and BESS provide exactly that,” noted Elena.

Now, Greece stands out as one of Europe’s most attractive emerging markets for BESS, driven by three key structural factors. First, the country exhibits one of the widest Day-Ahead Market spreads in Europe, with near-zero or negative prices during midday oversupply from renewables, mainly due to high solar penetration and low demand, and peaks in the evening, creating ideal arbitrage opportunities for batteries. Second, the ancillary services market remains largely untapped and unsaturated, still offering high price spikes and limited competition, which presents a rare opportunity for early participants to secure significant revenue streams before the market reaches maturity. Third, Greece’s Transmission System Operator (TSO) maintains a relatively conservative balancing strategy that results in high-frequency and sizeable activations of flexibility services. This environment favors BESS assets, which can respond rapidly and efficiently to grid needs, thereby ensuring both enhanced system reliability and strong financial returns for investors.

Before large-scale batteries enter operation, Optimus Energy has already witnessed and demonstrated the value of flexibility through its Demand Response portfolio of industrial clients. After a year of active participation in the Balancing Market and Ancillary Services, Optimus Energy has achieved strong and consistent revenues from just the mFRR products, confirming the commercial viability of energy flexibility solutions in Greece. However, demand side is not fit to instantly respond to various price signals — and that’s precisely where batteries can unlock their full potential, offering real-time responsiveness and maximizing value for both the system and the market. “Frequent activations and measurable economic results demonstrate that flexibility is valuable and essential for the system,” Elena explained.

Operating a BESS asset in Greece, just like in more mature markets, will require a cross-market optimization strategy, integrating participation across all available segments and products. Elena presented an indicative 24-hour market operation profile illustrating how a BESS asset will soon be required to perform in Greece.

Day-Ahead Auction – Setting the foundation for price arbitrage.

Capacity Allocation (FCR, aFRR, mFRR) – Locking in additional ancillary services revenues.

Intraday Trading (IDAs & Continuous XBID) – Continuously adjusting to updated forecasts, market signals and system needs.

Real-Time Energy Delivery – Physical energy dispatch of the asset.

Each step relies on smart capacity allocation and algorithmic decision-making, processing thousands of variables to transform market fluctuations into optimized, data-driven control.

Optimus Energy complements its operational readiness and expertise offering a range of tailored commercial structures for BESS asset owners, designed to align with each investor’s risk appetite and financial objectives:

Tolling Model: Provides guaranteed fixed revenue, making it ideal for investors seeking strong bankability and low-risk exposure.

Floor & Profit-Sharing Model: Combines a guaranteed baseline with shared market upside.

Fully Merchant Model: 100% exposure to market performance with shared profits.

Backed by a portfolio exceeding 4.5 GW, Optimus Energy leads Greece’s energy aggregation market. Through its partnership with enspired, the company will soon deliver real-time optimization and revenue maximization based on proven European performance.
